Ultralight Canoe

I built this ultralight canoe, BlueShoe, in 1995. It is a SnowShoe 16™ and is 15' 6" long with a beam of 36" and weighs about 32 lbs. Construction involves building a simple mold using wood and cardboard. The boat parts are assembled on the mold using epoxy. The only fastners are used to hold the thwart. The frame is then reinforced with Kevlar and covered with heat shrink Dacron. It was designed by Platt Montfort of Wiscasset, Maine. Monfort Associates (RFD 2 Box 416, Wiscasset, ME 04578 (207) 882 5504) sells plans and kits for a wide range of boats based on this construction method.
