Mount Washington

Tuckerman Ravine, Mount Washington

Tuckerman Ravine is popular for spring skiing. It is a cirque on the eastern side of Mount Washington. There are many other places on 'the big one' that provide challenging runs. This picture is looking down the Lobster Claw in the the Bowl. My brother took this picture of me in the spring of 1996. The pitches range from easy to 45 degrees and steeper. Crevasses and waterfalls create hazards for skiers. Falling ice is also a factor.

The Mount Washington Observatory maintains a year round weather station at the summit of the mountain. The highest recorded winds on the planet were recorded there. They provide avalanche and safety reports that are a great aid to the backcountry traveler. Check out their pictures, too.
