Ski Racing

Ski Racing at Waterville Valley, NH about 1976

I grew up in North Conway, NH and skied since I was 5. I started ski racing when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I raced for both a mountain ski team as well as my high school and university. In the high school meets I competed in all four events: Slalom, Giant Slalom, Cross Country and Jumping. I raced Slalom, Giant Slalom and Downhill in the Eastern Cup Series from 1975 through 1977, winning the cup in 1977. I also won the 1976 Junior National Downhill Championship.

I was named to the U.S. Ski Team's 'D Team' in 1976. I was moved up to the 'B' team in 1977 and raced the World Cup in the U.S. and Europe. I had a bad fall in Val Gardena, Italy just before Christmas of 1977 and ended up with broken vertebrae. My ski racing career came to an abrupt end. Although I could ski again the next season, I had decided that the risk involved was too great to be racing at 70 mph. I am glad to have had the opportunity to ski with the best.

RMM GS at Loveland, CO December 2001

During the winter of 1997, I started racing again in a corporate racing series at Shawnee Peak, Bridgeton, ME. I place in the top 15 out of 250 most weeks using telemark equipment; almost all other racers are using alpine gear.

I resumed racing in 2002-2003 with Rocky Mountain Masters, a USSA sanctioned organization for alpine ski racing for racers 21 and older.
