Telemark Skiing
| Telemark skiing was one of the first major advancements in skiing. It was
developed in Telemark, Norway in the late 19th century. The ski boot flexes at
the ball of the foot and is not held down at the heel, so that the skier has more mobility
when he is skiing. Telemark actually refers to the turn, not the equipment. People using
telemark gear can ski parallel or alpine style as well as telemark. While it is not for
everyone, it is gaining popularity in part because it gives accomplished skiers a new
technique to master. 25 years ago it began a resurgence. People were using cross country
gear and having a hard time of it, but it was fun just the same. Now most alpine ski
manufacturers have telemark skis in the product line and a whole industry is supporting
the 'free heeler'. |
