Bicycle Touring I have enjoyed many tours in Maine and New Hampshire. My first was in 1995. Earlier in the year I had had knee surgery and the tour was the culmination of my physical training during recovery. I left Portland, ME on a mountain bike with panniers. On the first day I pedaled the most direct way to Evans Notch. I used dirt roads, paved roads and some logging roads to get there. I met a couple of guys that were camping near by and joined them at their camp. We investigated a hawk or eagle that would attack us as we tried to get near a water pump in a USFS campground. The next morning I proceeded over the Notch and up the Wild River access road. I camped that night at the Spruce Brook shelter. From here the riding was on difficult terrain. I continued up the Wild River trail to Perkins Notch. I spent the night at the shelter there and then descended the Bog Brook trail into Carter Notch. Now I was back on dirt and paved roads. I eventually ended up in North Conway and got a ride back to Portland. Another trip began from Portland and followed a different route to the Wild River. I camped at the Spruce Brook shelter that night then hid my my bike in some bushes and moved my gear into a pack the next morning. I then climbed to Imp shelter in the Carter Range. I met a college group at the shelter and we had a nice evening of games, talk and cooking. The next day I traversed the Carters and returned to my bicycle. I got a ride back to Portland as I had to be back to work.
Serro Scotty Trailer on Bike Tour I bought the small trailer to be a base camp for trips. I have tours of various notches in Maine and New Hampshire with it. It has a small heater and stove and sleeps two comfortably. |
